Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four different sectors, such as the Ruhija sector, Buhoma sector, Rushaga sector, and Nkuringo sector, and each sector has its own different difficulty level for tracking the mountain gorillas. Mountain gorilla tracking is completely arranged and handled by the park ranger officials. Tourists are always accompanied by an experienced guide, park rangers, two armed military rangers, and other tourists allocated to that gorilla family. Buhoma Sector
Buhoma Sector is situated in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Buhoma sector is the closest to Kihihi airstrip, which makes it more accessible for tourists who would like to fly to Bwindi than road transportation. Buhoma Sector is a 2-hour drive from Kabale Town, which is the closest town to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and it also takes a 4-hour drive from Ishasha Sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, making it easy for many tourists to travel from Queen Elizabeth National Park to Bwindi. Buhoma is famous because it protects the highest number of mountain gorilla families, and the first habituation family of mountain gorillas is called the Mubare gorilla family, making it the first tourist destination. Out of all the 4 sectors, the Buhoma sector is the easiest to trek mountain gorillas and also the most convenient for older people. Besides mountain gorilla trekking, there are other activities that could be done in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, such as bird watching, waterfall trails, nature walks, and visiting the local communities, such as the Batwa and Bakiga people.
Rushaga Sector
Rushaga Sector is situated in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The Rushaga sector has many habituated mountain gorilla families. It is the only sector where gorilla habituation is currently taking place. Rushaga sector can be easily accessible by travelers coming from Kigali via the Cyanika border in Kisoro district, which can take approximately 3 hours to drive. Apart from mountain gorilla trekking, there are other tourist activities that can be done in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, such as boat trips on Lake Mutanda, nature walks, bird watching, and cultural experiences like the Batwa community.
Nkuringo Sector
The Nkuringo sector is perched in the southern region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The Nkuringo sector is another home to a fully habituated gorilla family. The Nkuringo sector is famous for the views of the Virunga Mountains, such as Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamuragira. Mountain gorilla trekking in the Nkuringo sector is considered one of the hardest sectors because of the terrain.
Ruhija Sector
Ruhija sector is located in the eastern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The Ruhija sector is more suitable for tourists who have both Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in their itineraries using the Ishasha sector. The Ruhija sector houses four gorilla families, and it's one of the coldest.
How difficult is Gorilla trekking in Uganda?
Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is situated in south-western Uganda, within the junction of mountain forests and plains. The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is famous for its extraordinary biodiversity and covers over 32,000 ha.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park accommodates half of the total number of endangered mountain gorillas remaining in the world, over 100 species of ferns and butterflies, many bird species, and more than 160 tree species.
Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is on the eastern edge of the Albertine Rift Valley, which makes it host a rich flora and fauna. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is believed to be a Pleistocene refugium, with the greatest number of different tree species in East Africa because of its altitude.
The Bwindi impenetrable forest is home to approximately half of the world’s endangered mountain gorilla population in that conservation frontline that is isolated within an outstanding biological richness and one of tropical Africa’s rural highest population densities.
Bwindi impenetrable forest national park also protects several habituated groups, which can be tracked in this biologically diverse region, as well as providing shelter to other primates such as chimpanzees, baboons, elephants, antelopes, and the 23 rift valley endemics.
When Can I travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National park in 2024/2025
Tourists can visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda at any time of year, but Bwindi is best visited during the dry months of June, July, August, September, and again from December to February. During the short rainy months, the tropical rain forest trekking trails are dry and less slippery, making it easy to trek through the jungles and see mountain gorillas. The dry season also gives tourists the best chances for clear photography.
